Some Semantic Corrections and Additions to WordNet 1.7

When I initialized the KB of WebKB-2 with the part of WordNet 1.7 related to nouns I have made 335 semantic corrections (120 removals of links between categories, 146 modifications of link kinds, 72 modifications of link destinations) and 163 additions of links. Links between WordNet categories and our top-level ontology are presented in this top-level ontology, not below. Furthermore, the generalization links from WordNet that I converted into instanceOf links (thus distinguishing subtypeOf links from instance of links, and types from individual) are also not presented here.

Below, I list the source categories of the modified/removed/added links, and the current links from these categories. At the beginning of each category annotation, the update that has been done is explicited (and why it has been done, if this is not obvious). There may be have been more than one update for a category; when these updates are of a different kind (e.g. link removal and link modification), the category is listed in more than one section below.

Here is the EBNF grammar for each entry:
CATEG_ID CATEG_ANNOT (LINK_KIND CATEG_ID+) ("," LINK_KIND CATEG_ID+)* ";"

  CATEG_ID   = "#wn"WN_ID"|"KEY_NAME("__"OTHER_NAME)*
  CATEG_ANNOT= "(^$("MY_ANNOTATION")$ "WN_GLOSS"^)"

WN_ID being the category identifier used in WordNet, i.e. its offset in the file data.noun,
KEY_NAME the name used as (unique) key in WebKB-2 for the category, and
LINK_KIND a character representing a link:  '<' (subtypeOf), '>' (subtype),  '^' (instanceOf),  ':' (instance),  '=' (equal),  '~' (similar),  '!' (exclusion),  'p' (part),  'P' (partOf),  'l' (location),  'L' (locationOf),  'm' (member),  M (memberOf),  'o' (object),  'O' (objectOf).

Reminder: a category may have various names (which may be shared by other categories) but can be uniquely referred via an identifiers. In WebKB-2, identifiers for WordNet categories begin by '#' (or "wn#" but the prefix "wn" can be ommited) followed by the "key name" (or the "alternative key", the character '|' and the key name), optionally followed by the other names separated by "__". For example, the following identifiers lead to the same category: wn#whole_thing, #whole_thing, #wn00002596|whole_thing__whole__unit, #whole_thing__whole__unit.
Use the following text field to search a category in WebKB-2 via a name or an identifier.

Most of the 322 deleted or modified links were updated because they were found (most often automatically) to be redundant (44) or inconsistent with other links (about 240). Inconsistencies were most often detected because category exclusion was violated, which happens when a category is directly or indirectly classified as subtype or instance of categories that are linked by an exclusion link (one of the few in WordNet or the many in our top-level ontology). For example, this has permitted to catch objects classified both as action and agent/instrument/result of action (e.g. #relaxant, #interpretation) or communication medium/content (e.g. #epilog, #thanksgiving), or both as communication medium/content and a physical entity (e.g. #book_jacket) or an attribute (e.g. #academic_degree), or the mis-use of links such as subtypeOf instead of locationOf (e.g. many city/regions where battles have occured were classified both as city/regions and battles) or memberOf (e.g. between some species and their genus).

Redundancy was detected by exploiting the transitivity of specialization, partOf and memberOf links. Apart from exclusion and specialization links, I have not exploited the combination of other links for detecting inconsistencies or redundancies. For example, I should exploit the fact that "if t2 specializes t1, and t1 memberOf t0, then t2 memberOf t0" as this will detect more redundant links in WordNet (e.g. the fact that both #dog and its subtype #hound_dog are member of #pack.animal_group would be detected). I also have not exploited negative constraints such as "if t2 specializes t1, then t2 cannot be linked by any other kind of link to t1" but it does not seem that WordNet 1.7 has many redundancies of this kind.

Removal of links

Of the 120 removed links, 44 were removed because they were redundant (see the strings "already" in our annotations), 61 because they led to an inconsistency, and 14 because I connected the direct subtypes of #entity and #abstraction to various more precise types of our top-level ontology and decided to cut the links to #entity and #abstraction. These 14 links were cut because (i) in WordNet, #entity and #abstraction are catch-all categories (with a set of rather unrelated direct subtypes) which are too general to serve any purpose for knowledge representation tasks (see the strings "too general for KR" below), and (ii) there is no point in showing these two types each time the supertype hierarchy of a type is displayed (this hierarchy is already big and these types bring no new information).

In the following annotations, expressions like "'<' #entity removed" mean that the '<' link between the source category (#whole_thing in the first considered case) and its destination (#entity) has been removed.

Modification of link destination

In the following annotations, expressions like "'<' #psychological_feature replaced by pm#state" mean that the '<' link from the source category (in the considered case, #feeling) has been given a new destination (here pm#state). Addition of links

Of the 160 link additions, 18 have been made during the integration of WordNet to WebKB-2 and 142 later when using the ontology for representing knowledge (the links presented below are not domain-dependent). 65 of all these links connect WordNet categories, while 90 connect a WordNet category to a category I created (however, links to my top-level ontology are not listed here). Although all these links should have "pm" as creator, for convenience and historical reasons, this is not the case for the first 18 links.

Here are 142 links we had to add when actually representing knowledge. The used syntax is a bit more complex than the one presented at the beginning of this document (see the FT grammar for details). When a category identifier is followed by " (pm)", this means that the links with the source category has been created by me.
